Cycle as an alternative transport

Cycle as an alternative transport

DHAKA, the capital of Bangladesh, is one of the most crowded cities in the world and is known for its traffic congestion. People are stuck in a traffic gridlock for hours together. In the process a lot of working hours are lost. Of late, this has become the number one problem in the city. In order to avoid public transports which are crowded, the number of private vehicles is increasing everyday and contributing to serious traffic jams in the city. The increasing number of vehicles along side swelling city population due to increasing migration from the countryside, are adding to the miseries of people.
In a situation like this bicycle can be a better alternative. It will not only greatly reduce traffic congestion, but can also contribute to creating a better environment by reducing carbon emission which is the main concern today. Cycling so far is being treated as a leisurely drive. But now it could be converted into a main transport for commuting inside the city. For this the government has a big role to play. It should encourage people to use bicycles as a regular means of transport. This will bring down the number motorised transports plying the city streets. A promotional campaign can be launched to that effect. It can also think of a different lane for bi-cycles for which a small revision of road planning is required.
There are other benefits of using bi-cycle as a transport. Cycling is a good physical exercise, it can reduce pollution from our city, minimise cost and save  time. Cycle can really be a great choice for alternative transport system rather than bus or rickshaws, in the near future.
